Lake Buchanan
Lake Buchanan, the largest of the Highland Lakes in Texas, spans over 22,000 acres with more than 120 miles of shoreline. Its deep, scenic waters fed by the Colorado River make it a favorite spot for fishing, boating, and outdoor recreation.
The surrounding lake house community remains modest yet active, with about 650 full-time residents and a steady mix of vacation homes and rentals. The area’s relaxed atmosphere and natural beauty continue to draw visitors seeking a peaceful escape.

Motif Architects developed two distinct concept packages in tandem—initiating design sketches for the Waterway Project before launching into the Ed Low Project shortly after. Each site offered unique opportunities and constraints, inspiring complementary yet individualized design paths. Though crafted as separate residences, both projects were envisioned to reflect a shared architectural language rooted in bold structural moves and seamless integration with the surrounding landscape.
The Waterway Project sits lower on the bluff, embracing immediate lakefront access and a sense of grounded connection to the water’s edge. In contrast, the Ed Low Project is perched at the top of the cliff, commanding expansive 240-degree views that stretch across Lake Buchanan’s dramatic horizon. These elevation differences guided the spatial organization and massing of each home, with the Waterway dwelling favoring intimacy and enclosure, while the Ed Low residence prioritized openness and panoramic reach.
Both designs incorporate a set of precise owner directives, including large cantilever spans for dramatic overhangs, nearly flat rooflines to emphasize horizontality, standardized window systems for consistency and efficiency, and striking V-shaped columns that double as structural elements and visual anchors. These features helped unify the two projects while allowing each to respond uniquely to its site—a study in contrast and cohesion.

839 Ed Low Drive
Perched approximately 150 feet above the shimmering expanse of Lake Buchanan, this 1.28-acre site is enveloped by the rugged beauty of Texas Hill Country. Native vegetation and dramatic terrain enhance its sense of privacy, creating a tranquil retreat tucked away from the bustle of daily life. With sweeping lake views framed by mature trees and rocky outcrops, the property offers a rare blend of seclusion and natural grandeur—perfect for those seeking serenity without sacrificing scenery.
Design Concept
This 4,825vsqft hillside residence features a clean, angular design with a dynamic roofline and a strong connection to the surrounding landscape. Large windows and expansive glass doors flood the interior with natural light and provide panoramic views, while cantilevered balconies with wood soffits and sleek metal railings enhance the contemporary aesthetic. The exterior combines smooth white stucco with dark brick for contrast and texture.
Built into a sloping site, the structure uses exposed supports (v-columns) and a raised foundation to accommodate the grade, blending architectural boldness with environmental responsiveness

589 Waterway Lane
Set approximately 25 feet above the flood zone and nestled directly along the lake’s edge, Waterway offers an ideal sanctuary for avid lake enthusiasts.
Located on a dramatic hillside cliff, the home is designed to capture panoramic views, with expansive picture windows that frame the water’s beauty in every direction. Its elevation and orientation ensure both protection and unforgettable vistas—perfect for those who live to be lakeside.
Design Concept
This 4,941 sqft modern waterfront home is crafted to blend seamlessly with its sloping natural landscape, showcasing sleek lines and breathtaking views. The design features a striking asymmetrical roof and a combination of vertical and horizontal forms that create distinct and defined volumes. Expansive floor-to-ceiling and large glass doors invite the outdoors in, enhancing natural light and the connection to the water.
The exterior showcases a mix of white stucco or fiber cement panels paired with dark accents and warm wood soffits. Elevated decks and sheltered patios, supported by slender steel columns, offer outdoor living spaces on both levels while a robust concrete foundation secures the home to the hillside. The incorporation of natural stone in the landscaping reflects the rugged shoreline, emphasizing the harmony modern architecture and its surroundings.
